Series problem

The three locally represented Galactic Empire novels explore political orders before Asimov's mature Foundation setting. They are linked less by a continuous cast than by the formation of imperial scale: regional conquest, unequal planetary economies, Trantorian expansion, radioactive Earth, and the loss or manipulation of civilizational memory.

Series-scale movement

The Stars, Like Dust presents fragmented regional power, noble houses, conquest, and a politically useful document from a half-remembered Earth. The Currents of Space moves toward Trantorian expansion while centering a planetary commodity hierarchy whose administrative routines make empire concrete. Pebble in the Sky reaches a more consolidated imperial order but shows Earth marginalized through radiation, prejudice, and distorted memory.

Read together, the novels show consolidation without full integration. Political reach grows faster than shared legitimacy, and information about resources, origins, and peripheral populations remains strategically uneven. That makes the sequence a useful prehistory to the collapse-management institutions in Foundation Sequence.
